Our lives are poisoned by a large number of diseases. One of them is osteoarthritis of the knee joint. This disease occurs most often in women, mainly after forty years. Very often the disease spoils the lives of overweight people due to the increased load on the joints. But the disease can affect the body not only in adulthood. It often develops in young athletes, as well as after injuries, which is why it is often confused with other diseases of the knees. To make sure you are developing osteoarthritis of the knee, you need to determine the presence of certain symptoms.
Symptoms
Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is called gonarthrosis. Gonarthrosis occurs in three stages, each of which is characterized mainly by increasing pain.
The diagnosis can be determined by signs characteristic of the first stage:
- mild knee pain when walking;
- increased pain when descending or ascending stairs;
- severe pain in the morning after rest, which weakens over time;
- swelling of the knees, in severe cases there is synovitis - an accumulation of fluid in the joint bag, which subsequently fills the space behind the knee.
It is also worth noting that severe pain does not come as a surprise. They are preceded by a long period (usually several months) of mild knee pain.
The second stage of the development of osteoarthritis of the knee joint, in addition to the increasing pain, is characterized by the presence of painful crunch and the inability to normally bend or unfold the leg.
In the third stage, the pain becomes even stronger, because of them it is no longer possible to even fall asleep. Now the knee can be bent only at an angle of 90 degrees and it is very difficult to find a position in which it does not hurt. In the affected joint, the blood circulation is disturbed, and its deformation begins.
It is quite difficult to treat osteoarthritis of the knee in the third stage of development. Therefore, when the first symptoms and signs are detected, it is necessary to immediately look for ways to arrange the joints.
